The opportunity

This post is an exciting opportunity for a Post Graduate, or Post-Doctoral Researcher (or equivalent demonstrable industry / research experience) to work as the Research & Development (R&D) Project Lead, facilitating a novel collaborative project, between Central Saint Martins (UAL) and Tibor Ltd.

The successful candidate will work with the management, commercial and R&D teams at Tibor Ltd, a company specialising on the design and production of deep textured luxury fabrics for modern interiors, and research experts in weaving and textile design at Central Saint Martins in University of the Arts London.

The principal aim of the project is to research, develop and produce a new luxury interior fabric using sustainable fancy yarns, innovating at every stage of the production process - from spinning to dyeing, weaving and finishing.

The main purpose of this role is to work collaboratively with the Academic Mentor and the Company Lead facilitating the delivery of the project’s key objectives, which include setting up an R&D-focussed micro mill in London whilst working with existing manufacturing partners in Northern England to produce novel and sustainable textiles. The role requires an experienced textiles designer with extensive industry experience in weaving, sustainable textiles design and manufacturing and an interest and/or experience in applied and collaborative research.

About you

  • PG or Doctoral qualification in the area of weaving, woven textiles design or equivalent and relevant research and/or industry experience. (essential)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of yarn spinning and construction, dyeing, twisting, finishing and weaving gained through research and/or relevant R&D industry work. (essential)
  • Knowledge of sustainable materials, textiles and relevant processes. (desirable) 
  • Experience of working in an industrial mill, including a good understanding of lean manufacturing and production flows and an appreciation of commercial requirements for woven textiles. (desirable)
  • Experience with operating industrial machinery including looms. (desirable)
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills. (essential)
