The opportunity

The Sustainable Design Lecturer is responsible for delivering of a range of content related to sustainable design practices on the MA Biodesign course.

The MA Biodesign course is extending its breadth of expertise in topics of sustainable design practices in response to the climate emergency. You will inform the curriculum through your knowledge and expertise working on key sustainability issues and assist in increasing the impact and relevance of biodesign/ biotechnology pedagogies, sustainable design research and industry engagement in this field.

The post-holder is responsible for delivering teaching experience on the MA Biodesign courses and will work collaboratively with the Course Leader in:

  • Providing sustainable design teaching across all units of the course in topics such as: climate change, intersectionality, circular design, waste management, bioremediation, biofabrication, biocomputation, design of energy and carbon optimization in manufacturing processes, air pollution, biomaterials, life cycle assessment, etc.
  • Demonstrable ability to translate theoretical principles to applied, practical scenarios.
  • Providing effective management and inspiring guidance to enable excellence in learning and teaching.

    Requirements of the role:

    • Undergraduate degree in design studies, engineering, materials science or associated subject
    • A strong holistic knowledge of the relationship between the environment and the UN Sustainability Goals, as well as of current legislation, and policies relating to climate action is essential
    • Experience of teaching & assessment in a higher education environment (permanent, fractional, or hourly paid contract), including experience of online/ blended learning
    • Applies an inquiring, innovative and reflexive approach to teaching
    • Considers equality, diversity and inclusivity in all aspects of teaching and assessment
    • Shows commitment to understanding the range of students’ experiences within a course
    • Collaborates and works effectively within team and across different professional groups
    • Evidence of research, knowledge exchange and/ or professional practice that contributes to the advancement of sustainable design activity and is relevant to the goals of the Programme, College and University.
    • Evidence of using contacts within subject peer group to develop partnerships or collaboration
    • Higher degree (e.g. MA) in design studies, engineering, materials science or associated subject (Desirable).
    • Teaching qualification (PG Cert or equivalent) (Desirable)
    • Member of the Higher Education Academy (Desirable)
    • Membership of professional bodies and associations is desirable
