The opportunity

You will provide the vision for the Years 1 Cultural Studies curricula for BA Fashion Design, BA Fashion Communication, BA Textile Design and BA Jewellery Design courses and set the agenda for the development, maintenance and enhancement of quality.

Teaching is through lectures, seminars and tutorials, introducing key concepts in cultural and historical studies for art and design. You will work with students to explore a range of research methods and approaches, to consider the politics of creative practice and also to encourage critical thinking. There are a large number of students across these four courses from a wide range of backgrounds and we expect the post holder to be committed to student centred teaching and learning. You will be working with a team of research-active Cultural Studies lecturers, full time, fractional and Associate Lecturers, as well as other academic, technical and administrative staff.

Managing the curriculum includes planning and timetabling, assessment, organising and managing staff and contributing to the Jewellery & Textiles Programme and the Fashion Programme Management Teams, Course and College committees.

About you

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join the Cultural Studies team who can enhance the College, programmes and courses’ profile through a strong research background.  You will hold a BA and MA in Cultural Studies or related discipline and be a leading authority in Cultural and Historical Studies in Fashion / Textiles / Jewellery or associated discipline. A PhD in Cultural Studies or related discipline / HE teaching qualification is desirable. With relevant experience of teaching, assessment, admissions, management and organisation of a UG academic programme, you possess the ability to work collaboratively in a team and across different professional groups. An effective communicator, both orally and in writing, you have the ability to adapt the message for a diverse audience in an inclusive and accessible way, building and maintaining positive relationships with students and staff alike.

In return, University of the Arts London offers generous leave, an attractive pension and a commitment to your continuing personal development and training in an environment that encourages excellence, creativity and diversity. Relocation assistance is available.

If you have any queries about this role please contact the CSM Staffing Team by emailing jobenquiries@csm.arts.ac.uk or call 0207 514 7885.

What we offer

We are UAL

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education.  Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally.  The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline.  Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas, and are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject, so emerging work is at the forefront of its area.  CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of our general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible.
