The opportunity

MA Graphic Communication Design would like to identify new potential Graduate Teaching Assistants for the 2020–21 academic year. Graduate Teaching Assistants work under the supervision of senior academic staff in delivering learning and teaching and related support to students across both years of the course. The role is open to anyone who has earned an MA (or equivalent) degree in a field related to graphic and/or communication design within the last 2 years and who has a particular interest in teaching practice.

This part-time role (one year on an hourly paid basis, resources permitting) will specifically focus on projects underway related to inclusivity and anti-racism in graphic communication design and higher education. The role will entail providing facilitation, support and formative feedback to students in the development of their studio practice. It may also include development of course materials and participation in teaching activities that recognize a broad range of historical, social, and disciplinary perspectives on our subject.

Graduate Teaching Assistants will also be provided with support and mentorship toward the cultivation of a long-term teaching practice.

What we offer

We are UAL

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education. Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally. The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline. Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas and are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject, so emerging work is at the forefront of its area. CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of our general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible.

MA Graphic Communication Design brings critical depth and rigour to an increasingly noisy and disorienting visual landscape. The course intervenes meaningfully in a world continuously reconfigured by its modes of communication and knowledge production. The course is distinguished by its pursuit of a critically engaged and rigorous practice that integrates graphic communication design and traditional academic research. An important aim of the course is to facilitate the formation of communities around a dynamic and evolving subject field. We recognize that our challenge—and opportunity—is to engage students and staff collaboratively and inclusively in the continual co-creation of our subject field, together interrogating existing forms of knowledge as well as shaping new forms.

MA Graphic Communication Design is part of the Graphic Communication Design Programme, which also includes BA Graphic Communication Design. You can view examples of recent student work and find out more about the course and the programme here:
