The opportunity

The UAL Language Development Programme is offered to all UAL degree programme students who are speakers of English as an additional language (ie over 40% of UAL’s c19,000 students).  Language Development is part of the International Student Experience Programme, a portfolio of provision and resources for UAL students and staff in support of the international student experience, including attainment.

As Head of Language Development, you will lead the Programme and manage a team of around 20 tutors and 2 administrative staff.  You will work closely with other senior managers in the Language Centre, in the Library and Student Support Services Directorate and with academic teams in UAL’s colleges.

You will regularly engage with the wider UAL community in order to promote and raise the profile of the work of the Language Development and the International Student Experience Programmes, and you will use your engagement with the wider EAP sector and your own CPD to inform your work.

You will manage budgets, resources and staffing associated with this work.

About you

You will have extensive knowledge, including teaching experience, of insessional English language provision in UK higher education and of good practice in its academic management.  You will be familiar with the challenges faced by speakers of English as an additional language in this setting, as well as the challenges in delivering a support programme for them, and of the latest thinking in these areas.  You will be familiar with the academic culture of UAL or similar institutions.  You will be able to demonstrate effective management and leadership skills in particular, and be able to act as a compelling team leader for your Programme, and communicator for the Language Development and International Student Experience Programmes.
