Reporting to the Director of Health and Safety, the Head of Health and Safety - Operations is a new role in the University Health and Safety team; the role has been created to:

  • provide focussed line-management of four College-based health and safety advisors
  • operationalist the University's Health and Safety Strategy ensuring delivery of improvement activities and projects into the Colleges and support services departments
  • ensuring that the health and safety arrangements remain effective in providing a safe and healthy work and study environment for our staff and students

The role is nominally based in Kings Cross but will require travel to our different sites across London.

University of the Arts London (UAL) has an international reputation in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts, and close to 19,000 students from over 130 countries. UAL is made up of six colleges – Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Arts, with origins dating back to the mid 19th century.  Our colleges offer more than 100 undergraduate courses – and we are home to Europe's largest postgraduate arts and design community.  UAL employs around 2500 salaried staff plus our associate and visiting lecturers.

The University has an extensive programme of shows and events across the year from local student shows to major external events.  UAL also engages in collaborative programmes and projects with external parties some of whom occupy UAL owned/ managed spaces.

The health and safety team are part of the Operations and External Affairs (OEA) team which reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Operations (the UAL Chief Operating Officer).  Led by the Director of Health & Safety, the team provides a trusted source of expertise and support to the university to ensure the health and safety of staff and students, and those affected by what we do. 

UAL has a total estate exceeding 160,000 m2 spread across 15 sites from Wimbledon in South West London to Hackney in the North East.   UAL also operates 10 art shops and 17 catering outlets based across the Colleges.  The University is investing millions of pounds into major construction projects to build new sites for London College of Fashion in Stratford and London College of Communication in Elephant and Castle. 

The successful applicant will be someone who is a thoroughly modern health and safety professional.  As well as holding a NEBOSH diploma (or equivalent qualification) and being a chartered member of IOSH, the ideal candidate will be able to inspire, coach and lead the team of health and safety advisors to provide an excellent support service for our stakeholders - our staff and students.  They will have excellent written/ presentation and influencing skills, and be highly effective in building and nurturing relationships with stakeholders.  

As the role is a new position in the University the candidate will have the opportunity to work with the Director of Health and Safety to shape the role so it best meets the requirements of the team and stakeholders.
