The opportunity

This is a unique role leading the world’s first interdisciplinary MA Biodesign course. This research-led two-year Masters degree will introduce designers to a set of tools and methods related to the field of biomimicry, biology and synthetic biology. The course will enable students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, such as product design, architecture, textiles, jewellery and fashion, to develop a strong ethical understanding of how to be a designer in the Anthropocene era.

You will be responsible for the academic leadership of the course, including the day to day management of staff and resources as well as all areas of learning, teaching and assessment of students. You will lead on the process of course development, building partnerships with external research, commercial and public organisations to enhance the students learning, entrepreneurship and employability.

About you

We’re looking for highly motivated and entrepreneurial academic with a track of record of biodesign teaching, research and professional practice in a design discipline, coupled with a strong commitment to sustainable development and the ethical imperative for a transition to a bio-circular economy.

You will be a compelling advocate and communicator who can build productive working relationships across the College and externally with existing and potential partners and collaborators. You will be able to translate your expertise into a vision for the course. A relevant post-graduate degree-level qualification is essential and will ideally be supported by a teaching qualification.

In return, University of the Arts London offers generous leave, an attractive pension and a commitment to your continuing personal development and training in an environment that encourages excellence, creativity and diversity. Relocation assistance is available.

What we offer

We are UAL

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education.  Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally.  The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline.  Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas, and are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject, so emerging work is at the forefront of its area.  CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of our general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible.

In 2019 Central Saint Martins is launching a new interdisciplinary Masters course bringing biodesign out of the laboratory into the creative field. Embedded in the emerging circular bio-economy, this course will enable students to integrate biological sciences into their creative practice to develop new sustainable propositions for the future.
