The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a research through practice specialist with postgraduate teaching experience to play a key role in contributing to UAL’s postgraduate Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication programme. Courses within this programme are primarily aimed at staff who have a lecturing, teaching or facilitating role in higher education.

You will take the lead on delivering and developing the practice as research elements of the programme. Your main responsibilities will be the design, preparation, teaching, administration, assessment and unit leadership of the Research through Practice and Introduction to Practice as Research units. You will also lead a Master’s Dissertation seminar group, and teach on the PgCert Self-initiated Project unit. You will co-edit Spark, UAL’s Creative Teaching and Learning Journal, contributing to its imminent redesign, focusing on eliciting and embedding practice-related content.

You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge in the context of Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication. You will work closely with other academic staff, including the Programme Director/Course Leaders.

About you

You will have knowledge and experience of teaching research through practice (as methodology) in the creative arts. Postgraduate teaching experience in HE is a requirement, as are a postgraduate qualification in higher education teaching and learning and a PhD in a related subject area. This will be complemented by disciplinary knowledge and expertise, effective teamworking, and a commitment to enhancing the student experience. You should also have some editorial experience.

Applicants should have:

  • Previous experience of teaching research through practice methodology/methods and supervising dissertations and/or final projects (at postgraduate level). ESSENTIAL
  • Good awareness of HE teaching and learning in the creative arts. ESSENTIAL
  • PhD in arts/humanities/social sciences (or be near completion). ESSENTIAL
  • PgCert in higher education (or equivalent teaching qualification). ESSENTIAL
  • Fellowship of the HEA (or an application underway). DESIRABLE 
  • Editorial experience. DESIRABLE
