The opportunity

As of 13/06/23, the closing date has been revised from 15/06/23 to 22/06/23

This is an exciting opportunity to join our technical management team. Working closely with the Head of Technical Resources the Technical Manager Sustainable Practices will take an overview on the college’s technical provision’s sustainable practice. With sustainable practices, materials and technology constantly evolving at a rapid speed, we work at the cutting edge of new thinking and developments to prepare our students for successful careers in the creative industries of the future.

The Technical Manager Sustainable Practices will develop clear strategies and implement policies that enhance the student user experience with responsibility for the provision of technical operations management, with a sustainable practices purview across Central Saint Martins. This will include direct line management of several of our Technical Coordinators, who in turn manage the following technical clusters: Print, Fashion & Textiles, Photography, Surface & Bio.

Strong technical operational delivery is important. But what will make the difference is how you work with people and balance the needs of the academic programmes with technical resources available, forging collaborative relationships between academic and technical colleagues to ensure the best possible student experience. A solid technical background will be crucial as will experience of managing shared technical resources and managing technical staff.

Your role will encompass communicating with stakeholders, acting as a lead point of contact for technical resources and ensuring access to up-to-date and accurate information for students, academics, fellow technicians and other university staff. As an active member of the Technical Management team you will attend certain University and College Committees and deputise for the Head of Technical Resources where necessary. You will also have the opportunity to develop new skills and experience across a wide range of technical workshops.

If you are interested in coming for a tour of our workshops on Wednesday 14th June at 3pm, please email Jess Kilpatrick: j.kilpatrick@csm.arts.ac.uk to register your interest. Jess will confirm the dates and times of the tours directly with you.

About you

We are looking for an experienced, adaptable, dynamic, self-motivated person who will relish the challenge of supporting a diverse range of talented and renowned academics and impacting the environmental impact in CSM technical resources and student practice. You will have extensive experience of leading technical and operational delivery in a complex environment, gained through working in higher education and/or creative or heritage industries. You should have a strong holistic knowledge of creative practice in arts and design, with an innovative and reflexive approach to making and resourcing for making.

You will consider equality, diversity and inclusivity in all aspects of technical resource design, and you’ll collaborate and work effectively across different professional groups.

You must be able to plan, prioritise and manage resources effectively to achieve objectives, and consider sustainable design, process and materials that contribute to the advancement of sustainable activity relevant to the workplace and the goals of the University. A solid understanding of safe workshop infrastructure with applied professional experience in the regulation of health and safety, and proficiency in how this relates to building and Estates services. An interest encompassing emerging technologies for biomaterials in making practices would be advantageous.

If there are any aspects of the role that you may require training in, then this will be provided. CSM is committed to the personal development of its technical staff.

UAL is committed to addressing the under-representation of staff from Black and Minority Ethnic communities, using our student profile as a reference point.
