The University of the Arts London (UAL) is a world Top 6 university for art and design according to the QS World University Rankings® and Europe's largest specialist university for art and design.  UAL has a clear strategic vision set out until 2022 which is focussed on providing transformative education, developing world-leading research and enterprise, becoming the centre of public debate for the future of arts, design, fashion and communication, and building an inspirational, physical environment that supports its students, staff and wider communities.

This is an exceptional opportunity to play a significant part in the planning and delivery of UAL’s first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign and deliver a multi-million pound target. The full priorities for the campaign are still to be finalised, but are expected to include UAL’s hugely ambitious capital plans (including entirely new campuses for the London College of Communication and the London College of Fashion within the next five years) and support for students facing increasingly difficult living conditions in London.

The Head of Trusts & Foundations will maximise income from trusts, foundations and statutory sources to support UAL’s strategic priorities. Leading a small and highly committed team, the post holder will develop and implement a robust strategy to generate income, cultivate and steward relationships with existing and prospective supporters, and ensure that compelling proposals and reports are produced and submitted.

The University draws together 6 renowned colleges, each with its own world-class reputation. Our state of the art facilities include workshops with letterpress machinery, studio theatres, gallery space as well as libraries and archives for research into hundreds of years of the greatest artists and designers.

We have launched the careers of many creative and cultural leaders with:

  • Over half of all Turner Prize winners and nominees in the 30 years since its inception are UAL alumni
  • 37 of the 80 Royal Academicians are UAL alumni; a further 17 are serving or former staff
  • Over half of the recipients of British Designer of the Year are UAL alumni
  • 10 UAL alumni who are current Royal Designers for Industry for product or industrial design
  • Over half of the fashion designers that show a London Fashion Week are UAL alumni
  • Multiple winners in the most prestigious art and design awards: from the BP Portrait Award; Jerwood Prize; Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize; Minerva Medal; BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Oscars

Recruitment for this role is part of the largest-ever investment in UAL’s fundraising capacity with seven posts being added to the existing Development department.  This investment reflects the enormous potential for fundraising at UAL, including plans for significant capital projects in a number of colleges, and the recent sign-off of the UAL Development Strategy 2016-2022 by the University’s Executive Board.

Your extensive fundraising experience will include a thorough understanding of trusts and foundations and a track record of successful applications, ideally at the six- and seven-figure level. Experience of building relationships with key charitable trust and foundation contacts, and delivering excellent donor care is essential to your success in this role, as is your passion for the arts, education and creative industries.

If you are interested in being part of an inspiring vision that will change the landscape of London and make a significant impact on the future of this institution and Britain’s creative future, we’d love to hear from you.  To view the information pack for this role please visit https://richmond-associates.com/jobs/head-of-trusts-foundations-2 or to have a confidential discussion regarding the role please contact Sonja Dunphy, Managing Director at Richmond Associates: info@richmond-associates.com, +44 (0)20 3617 9240.
