The opportunity

The Design School at the London College of Communication is looking to appoint a Lecturer in Illustration & Visual Media to contribute to the growing research community within the field of illustration and visual media and within the Design School through teaching, research and practice.

We are looking for ambitious, motivated and enthusiastic candidates with a critical knowledge and understanding of the contemporary, experimental image as well as a working knowledge of the use of digital technologies within illustration and visual media practices. Candidates are expected to be research active or be willing to undertake research within appropriate fields and to actively contribute to the culture within the school and the programme. We are interested in expanded practice, challenging narrow definitions of ‘illustration’ and are looking for candidates who are willing to work on developing the field.

As a lecturer on the MA Illustration & Visual Media you will be responsible for contributing to and developing engaging, challenging and inventive curricula and teach through lectures, workshops, tutorials and seminars. You will bring research and/or industry experience, and teaching experience at postgraduate level. You will make a significant contribution to pedagogic delivery, assessment, quality management and recruitment.

The appointed candidate will work under the direction of the Course Leader for Illustration and Visual Media as well as alongside the other lecturers to deliver the validated courses as well as contributing to School, College and University initiatives including research.

About you

We’re looking for a candidate with relevant undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, who has a critical knowledge and understanding of the expanded field of illustration practices as well as a working knowledge of the use of digital technologies within contemporary visual media. You will have experience of delivering innovative projects in a professional and/or academic environment and experience of a range of specialist skills and techniques, including research skills.

As an academic, previous experience of curriculum development is desired in addition to experience of academic research. We expect you to have a national/international reputation for research and/or practice in contemporary image-based practice in a wider cultural and socio-technical context.

The successful candidate should possess good interpersonal skills and be an inventive teacher. Candidates should demonstrate subject knowledge as well as skills relevant to subject development within an academic, research and professional context.
