Course Leader, MA Communicating Complexity (0.6 FTE)
We are looking for a dynamic and multidisciplinary academic practitioner to develop and run an innovative new postgraduate course positioned at the intersection of design and media studies. MA Communicating Complexity is a creatively-led communication design course in a world-leading graphic communication design programme. The course will foreground communication practice in the development of inclusive, accessible, and culturally resonant approaches to, and discourses around, contemporary global challenges. The starting point for the curriculum is to understand communication as deeply intertwined with complexity, and an increasingly vital skill in empowering responses to our most pressing and complex challenges—without resorting to simplification. The course is designed to be delivered in collaboration with a range of sectors and industries, and its Learning Outcomes refer to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. The course is planned to be delivered in a low-residency mode of study.
The Course Leader will be responsible for all aspects of MA Communicating Complexity including planning and delivery of academic units and assessments, overseeing high-quality curriculum, teaching, and feedback, coordinating the provision of pastoral and academic support, managing staff, participating in quality and enhancement processes, recruiting students, and developing the course’s external profile. During 2023, the incoming Course Leader will lead on delivery planning, the development of learning and teaching materials, and recruiting the initial cohort of students, who will begin their studies in late September. The successful candidate will be expected to work in accordance with current university academic policy and frameworks as well as contribute to the vision and strategic positioning of the programme.
Senior Lecturer, Graphic Communication Design (0.4 FTE)
We are offering applicants to the role of Course Leader, MA Communicating Complexity (0.6 FTE) the option of concurrently applying for the additional role of Senior Lecturer, Graphic Communication Design (0.4 FTE). The post-holder will work collaboratively across course teams, deploying specialist expertise to develop and deliver pedagogy and the curriculum in innovative and critical directions. An important ambition of this role is to contribute to the development of a cross-course staff culture which supports the implementation of programme-wide subject initiatives and sharing of best practices across courses. All candidates will be considered equally for the Course Leader (0.6 FTE) post irrespective of whether they are applying for the full (0.6 FTE + 0.4 FTE) or part-time (0.6 FTE only) role.

The Graphic Communication Design programme at Central Saint Martins facilitates a large heterogenous community of students and staff to thrive through graphic design and communication practice in diverse and meaningful ways. You will be committed to transformation and innovation in postgraduate education and the potential role(s) of communication practice in addressing contemporary global challenges. You will have a postgraduate qualification and a track record of contributions to the advancement of one or more fields of relevance to the course. You will have excellent leadership abilities, design and/or communication skills and experience in building and nurturing rigorous and vibrant cultures of learning. You will have an inventive and flexible approach to students’ learning experience and high aspirations for their achievement, their professional futures and the course’s advancement internationally.

Closing date: February 28. If you are short-listed, you will be invited to attend an interview, currently planned to be held on March 13. The interview will include an 8-minute presentation where you will be asked to present your vision for the development of the course as well as a half-hour micro-teaching session with students.
