The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a practice-based research specialist with higher education teaching experience to play a key role in contributing to UAL’s postgraduate Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication programme; courses primarily aimed at staff who have a lecturing, teaching or facilitating role in higher education.

You will take the lead on delivering and developing the practice-based research elements of the programme. Your main responsibilities will be the preparation, teaching, administration, assessment and unit leadership of the ‘Research through Practice’ unit; and also leading a Master’s ‘Dissertation’ seminar group. You will co-teach the elective unit, ‘Introduction to Practice as Research’.

You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge in the context of Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication. You will work closely with other academic staff, including the Programme Director/Course Leader.

Timetables for the year 2018/19 are available at: https://www.arts.ac.uk/about-ual/teaching-and-learning-exchange/professional-development/ma-academic-practice Please check your availability for the three unit schedules mentioned above, before applying as we cannot alter the delivery dates.

About you

You will have knowledge and experience of practice-based research in the creative arts to doctoral level. Teaching experience in HE is a requirement, as is a postgraduate degree in a related subject area. This will be complemented by disciplinary knowledge and expertise; effective teamworking; and a commitment to enhancing the student experience.

Applicants should have:

  • a postgraduate degree in a related subject area

  • a practice-based PhD in a creative arts discipline (or be near completion)

  • previous experience of teaching practice-based research and supervising dissertations and/or final projects

  • good awareness of HE teaching and learning in the creative arts

  • Fellowship of the HEA (or an application underway).

We warmly encourage applications from academics of colour, who are currently under-represented on our programme team.

If you have any queries about this role, you may contact the Programme Director, Catherine Smith at: c.h.smith@arts.ac.uk

This opportunity is closed to applications.
