The opportunity

This is a unique role for a proactive professional to provide information, advice and support on all aspects of Health and Safety in Chelsea, Camberwell and Wimbledon Colleges of Art. You will build on current good practice, working closely with staff and students across a wide range of disciplines in a lively, creative environment. You will also work across the University collaborating with colleagues in the health and safety team on shared issues and projects.

Reporting to the Director of Health and Safety, your day to day work will be within Chelsea, Camberwell and Wimbledon.  You will be based on Chelsea's Millbank site alongside the leadership team and you will need to be able to build strong working relationships with key stakeholders in that team including the Head of Technical Resources, the Deans and the Director of College Resources and Administration.

In addition to providing advice on technical health and safety matters, you will be responsible for developing the College’s annual health and safety annual operating plan to ensure that Chelsea, Camberwell and Wimbledon continue to improve health and safety performance.  You will monitor compliance with relevant legislation including creating regular reports on health and safety performance. You will investigate accidents and incidents, take part in audits, undertake or arrange inspections, consult with Trade Union representatives, oversee risk assessments, provide health and safety training, plan emergency drills and participate in relevant committee meetings.

The role is based in Chelsea College of Art at Millbank, Central London and it covers Camberwell and Wimbledon Colleges which means travel is required between sites.  Some travel will also be required between UAL sites to attend meetings and support the wider H&S team.

About you

The successful candidate will have excellent health and safety knowledge and be able to evidence how they have applied that knowledge in the workplace.  They will hold a NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent professional qualification) and be at least a graduate member of IOSH working towards Chartered status.  Experience of managing health and safety within creative, complex and dynamic environments is desirable.

You will be able to demonstrate and provide evidence of ongoing maintenance of professional competence as a Graduate or Chartered member of IOSH.

The team aims to work with and coach others in health and safety to build their health and safety competencies rather than adopting a more traditional ‘telling’ style and the post holder will need to follow this approach.  It is important that the post holder can apply informed and experienced professional judgement in the planning and resolution of issues, rather than by reference to rules and regulations.

The post holder will have excellent verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to confidently present to large groups, interpret and document complex technical material, write reports and clearly explain technical matters to staff and students.

The post holder will be authoritative, authentic and credible, with an ability to challenge constructively, engage colleagues and build solid, effective and enduring relationships.

You will be a self-motivated individual with the ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight timescales with an aptitude for prioritising and managing competing demands.

You will be curious about the roles of your stakeholders and their demands and priorities and you will be able to adjust your style and approach to reflect these without compromising health and safety.

You will be experienced in the production of detailed Health and Safety Plans and successfully developing electronic and manual Health and Safety records management systems.
