The opportunity

The aim of this role is to support the director and team in UAL’s new Social Design Institute by providing operational, financial and administrative management. UAL’s new institutes bring together expertise and knowledge in research, knowledge exchange and education across the university to consolidate, amplify and extend UAL’s research expertise in areas of strategic importance.

This role will be instrumental in shaping the institute’s emerging mission to shape the international research agenda in social design and design for sustainability and help to realise the strategic aims of UAL by working with partners, staff and students to achieve positive societal and environmental outcomes through design. It will involve working alongside colleagues across UAL’s six colleges and research centres, including academic researchers, knowledge exchange staff, and PhD and MA students.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the development of the new institute by developing processes and systems to manage and monitor institute activity, organising and coordinating activities within research and knowledge exchange, and managing interactions and communications with internal and external stakeholders.

You’ll have a background in operational management, possibly in a university setting, and be able to demonstrate experience of setting up systems and processes to enable the establishment and ongoing successful operation of the new institute.

About you

  • Educated to Degree Level (essential)
  • Project Management Qualification (desirable)
  • Experience of managing a relevant administrative environment including budget management, developing new systems and processes and working across a wide range of stakeholders (essential)
  • Experience of working in an academic research department or research centre (desirable)
  • Plans, prioritises and organises work to achieve objectives on time (essential)
  • Works collaboratively in a team and where appropriate across or with different professional groups (essential)
  • Uses initiative or creativity to resolve problems (essential)
