The opportunity

MA Photography is one of the three MA Pathways within the Fine Art programme at Central Saint Martins. As a lecturer your responsibilities will include teaching, assessment, unit management and development, curriculum development and research in fine art photography.

MA Photography is a pioneering fine art course that explores contemporary photography through a deep integration of research and practice. As a member of the teaching team you will need to be aware of the rich philosophical and critical underpinnings of the contemporary image, as well as the histories and aesthetics of the mechanically and computationally produced visual objects. The appointed will be required to support students’ academic research in the discipline and critically engage in reflexive and discursive processes. The appointed will encourage engagement and reflection within a framework of the histories and theories that have informed contemporary photography and fine art.

About you

You will be an experienced academic and researcher in the fields of photography and fine art, with a proven ability and strong commitment to learning, teaching and research at postgraduate level. You will promote the pursuit of the highest academic standards and of reflection, enquiry and creative risk taking to ensure that students are well-equipped intellectually, creatively and technically, not only to meet the challenges of contemporary professional practice, but to anticipate and initiate change.

You will have experience of teaching and course organisation and management, at postgraduate level. A dynamic, enthusiastic and committed academic, you will demonstrate an ability to motivate students and work as part of a team to engage and build relationships with external organisations, institutions and individuals.

In return, University of the Arts London offers generous leave, an attractive pension and a commitment to your continuing personal development and training in an environment that encourages excellence, creativity and diversity. Relocation assistance is available.

If you have any queries about this role please contact James Couling, Staffing Administrator, email j.couling@csm.arts.ac.uk or telephone 0207 514 7885

What we offer

We are UAL

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education.  Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally.  The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline.  Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas, and are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject, so emerging work is at the forefront of its area.  CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of our general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible.

MA Photography is part of the Fine Art programme at Central Saint Martins. It is an experimental course that seeks to explore the role of photography within the contemporary fine art and the landscapes of new media, computation, digital networks and mediated urban environments. While acknowledging the traditions of photographic practice, this course seeks to provide the students with the tools to redefine photography as a new 21st century art form, situated at the cross-roads of aesthetics, technology and philosophy.
