The opportunity

The programme directors at Central Saint Martins play a key role in shaping, leading and delivering the overall academic direction of their subject area. They have direct responsibility for the courses and staffing within their programme, as well as contributing to the wider academic strategy of the college. In recent years the Spatial Practices programme has gained a broad reputation for leading the debate around the intersection of spatial practice with social purpose; it is expected that the incoming programme director will work to develop this position, particularly in the context of the climate emergency and issues of social justice. The position also opens up opportunities for external partnerships to further the engagement and influence of the college in the area of placemaking.

About you

We are looking for a person with extensive experience of the higher education sector as well as active engagement with the spatial practices area through activities including practice, research, writing, policy and teaching. This is a leadership role and will require a good working knowledge of HE management and the operational requirements for running a programme that embraces large undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The Programme Director will be responsible for the academic leadership and management of the Spatial Practices Programme and its courses, including the maintenance and enhancement of standards and responsibility for the development and delivery of the curriculum. You will oversee the day to day management of the Programme including all areas of learning, teaching and assessment, as well as resource management and staffing. You should have experience of managing teams, and dealing with complex institutional and/or professional contexts, including issues of finance, HR and policies. You will also be confident and articulate in representing the programme to external audiences, and in developing partnerships. Finally, you should be collaborative and empathetic in the way you engage with others.

In return, University of the Arts London offers generous leave, an attractive pension and a commitment to your continuing personal development and training in an environment that encourages excellence, creativity and diversity. Relocation assistance is available.

What we offer

We are UAL

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education.  Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally.  The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline.  Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas, and are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject, so emerging work is at the forefront of its area.  CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of our general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible.
