The opportunity

The Lecturer in Contemporary Typography will lead and support the development of curricula and teaching on the BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design in the Design School at the London College of Communication. The successful candidate will undertake teaching and unit administration and contribute to curriculum development and research within the subject specialism of graphic design and critical practice with an emphasis on typography, type design, digital type, variable type, responsive type and generative practices. The post-holder is expected to have teaching or relevant industry experience in typography. An understanding of coding within type design is favourable.

BA GMD is a practice-based course and therefore we are interested in candidates who work through such concerns in a practical and digital manner. The Lecturer will work collaboratively within course teams, deploying specialist expertise to develop pedagogy and the curriculum in innovative and critical directions.

The post-holder will be expected to undertake:

  • Responsibility for development and delivery of subject-specialist projects and teaching sessions centred on working creatively and critical within socially and ecologically responsible design.
  • Responsibility for undergraduate students’ pastoral support, progress and attendance, maintaining records and liaising with colleagues as appropriate.
  • Pedagogic and curriculum development that stimulate thought and practice that challenge the canon of graphic design communication in regard to contemporary typography with the aim of promoting diversity and inclusivity.
  • Expand the capacity of the course to meet the need to prepare graduates for the dynamic creative landscape of graphic and media design.
  • Work with colleagues in adjacent specialist areas to support a widening range of experimental and ambitious practice amongst the GMD students.

Liaise with technical and support colleagues to adequately prepare and resource the course and students for technically advanced work.
