The opportunity

Course title: Sound Arts & Design: Sound Creation & Manipulation Unit Element 2: Synthesis

We are looking for a motivated individual to deliver a first-year undergrad sound unit that focuses upon sound synthesis in its multifarious forms.

The ideal applicant will have a comprehensive practical, theoretical and contextual knowledge of sound synthesis. Additive, subtractive, FM, sampling/waveform and granular techniques are all elements of the students’ final assessed work

Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment of a unit or part of a unit. You will make a significant contribution to the quality of learning and support our students receive in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully.

You will work closely with other academic staff, including the Programme Director and Course Leader.  The job description is available to download below.

About you

Essential technical knowledge might include professional usage of Logic X, Protools, Puredata, MaxMSP, Sonic Pi, Supercollider, hardware synthesis and sequencing, modular synthesis (Doepfer A-100 system) and semi-modular systems (ARP 2600, Korg MS-20 etc.).

  • How do you conceive the historic, contemporary and future trajectories of sound synthesis?
  • Might you, for example, reverse engineer a Korg Volca Keys or FM in software?
  • Can you demonstrate modular synthesis techniques using software emulators?
  • What might ear training involve to educate young practitioners about the various applications of the variable means of synthesising sound?
  • Do you have any knowledge of procedural audio and the means of synthesising sound effects as sound design for games, immersive theatre and new media?

While technical ability is vital, our students are artists, many with an interest in fine art and gallery contexts. It will be important to clearly communicate practical usages of the various forms of synthesis in a variety of aesthetic contexts.

Further information should be viewed on the course pages before application. Please note that we only accept online applications.

Hours: 9 sessions beginning January 12th 2018. Fridays 1000-1600
