The opportunity

As Programme Director, you will provide leadership for the Graphic Design discipline at Camberwell and Chelsea Colleges. As one of four Programme Directors in the Design School you will also contribute to the developing vision for the School and its strategic relationship to the sectors beyond the creative industries.

You will have responsibility for the strategic direction, design, development and delivery of the Graphic Design curricula as well as be responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of standards.

Through your national and international links and professional networks, you will promote the continuous development of the courses, reflecting critically on Graphic Design practice and speculating on its future in the contexts of research, knowledge exchange and teaching & learning as well as its future areas of interaction and practice.

About you

You will be a highly skilled and enthusiastic individual, with the ability to combine an externally facing approach to developing the Graphic Design profile nationally and internationally along with day to day management of the curricula and student experience.

With a postgraduate degree and appropriate professional experience, you will have the necessary background within higher education to provide effective management and compelling leadership. Creative and highly motivated, you will have strong communication skills and confidence in working with diverse audiences.  You will be committed to developing opportunities to share and exchange knowledge within a dynamic and creative environment and community of learning, practice and research.

In return, University of the Arts London offers generous leave, an attractive pension and a commitment to your continuing personal development and training in an environment that encourages excellence, creativity and diversity. Relocation assistance is available.

What we offer

We are UAL

University of the Arts London (UAL) is Europe’s largest specialist art and design university. Its unique creative community is made up of six renowned colleges, each with its own world-class reputation: Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Arts. UAL is ranked second in the world for Art and Design in the QS World University Rankings® 2019. Offering an extensive range of courses in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts, UAL is the main talent pipeline to the UK’s creative industries, and is home to a diverse community of students from 129 countries.

Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon all have international reputations with world leading graduates. Each of the Colleges has a unique history and identity. Camberwell, based in the heart of London's newest cultural hotspots, focusses on driving social impact through art and design. Chelsea, based in the central London, (next door to Tate Britain), inspires graduates to apply art and design practice to the social, cultural and political effects of globalisation. Wimbledon, also based in south London, is a centre for performance where students are encouraged to work collaboratively, working in teams to design, perform and manage theatre, performance and other live events.

As the smallest colleges within UAL they are brought together under one management structure which, amongst other things, drives an academic vision and delivery which ensures students have the benefits of studying within a small supportive community but at the same time are able to draw upon the extensive resources of the combined three colleges as well as the wider university.

The Design School is primarily concerned with the development and relevance of design practice and its future contexts of engagement. We are strategically structured around the disciplines of Graphic Design, Illustration, Textiles, 3D Design & Craft as we move beyond discipline towards innovative hybrid design practice. As a community of academics, researchers and design practitioners we look to engage with new sectors and contexts beyond discipline and beyond the creative industries challenging the areas of practice. We are committed to a social design agenda and pursuing the global design challenges of health, wealth, mobility, security and community. The Design School seeks to explore the development of new Design empathies for future, ethical and sustainable Design practice supporting transdisciplinary practice, speculation, new design methodologies and collaboration group working with diverse teams.
