The opportunity

As part of our continued improvement plan for Information Services, UAL are seeking to invest in an experienced Cabling & Data Centre Operative.

This position is primarily to provide support, maintenance and development of UAL's IT Cabling and IT Infrastructure, including data centre environmental control. Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide day-to-day monitoring and support of existing physical infrastructure, including; systems management and responding to any Data Centre alarm notifications.
  • Provide operational, administrative and procurement support for IT cabling and infrastructure requirements across building projects and seasonal works. This includes contractor management whilst onsite and escalation within the University as delays or unforeseen issues arise.
  • Assist with the Operations documentation, creating topology diagrams and floorplans clearly showing cable runs and types.
  • Be an active contributor to the Disaster Recovery procedures across all computer room facilities ensuring changes are documented and recorded.
  • Develop the daily maintenance strategy for the Data Centres and IT Wiring Facilities which should include regular checks of operating thresholds.
  • Work with the IT Cabling & Infrastructure Manager to further develop and upgrade the remote monitoring and systems management infrastructure.
  • You will ensure IT services are successfully integrated and delivered and will work with various internal and external stakeholders across the University.
 

About you

We are looking for someone with experience in the following areas. 

  • Data Centre Infrastructure including Structured Cabling Standards.
  • Data Centre monitoring tools. 
  • IT Procurement, Vendor and Contractor Management.
  • Working within a large team on major building projects.
  • You will also be able to use initiative and be able to work with minimal supervision. Some out of ours work is required on a purely voluntary basis.
