The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a doctoral supervision practice specialist to play a key role in contributing to UAL’s postgraduate Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication programme; courses primarily aimed at staff who have a lecturing, teaching or facilitating role in higher education.

You will take the lead on delivering and developing the researcher development and doctoral supervision elements of the programme. Your main responsibilities will be the preparation, teaching, administration, assessment and unit leadership of the SEDA accredited ‘Supervising Research Degrees’ unit; and the ‘Research Methods in Arts Higher Education’ unit. You will also teach into the PgCert unit, ‘Self-initiated Project’; and supervise Masters dissertations.

You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge in the context of Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication. You will work closely with other academic staff, including the Programme Director/Course Leaders and UAL’s Research Management and Administration (RMA) team.

Timetables for the year 2019/20 are available at: https://www.arts.ac.uk/about-ual/teaching-and-learning-exchange/professional-development/ma-academic-practice and https://www.arts.ac.uk/about-ual/teaching-and-learning-exchange/professional-development/pgcert-academic-practice
Please check your availability for the unit schedules mentioned above, before applying as we cannot alter the delivery dates.

About you

You will have knowledge and experience of research to doctoral level; as well as experience of supervising PhD students to completion. This will be augmented by expertise in the field of doctoral supervision and researcher development. Teaching experience in HE is a requirement, as is a postgraduate degree and PhD in a related subject area. These will be complemented by disciplinary knowledge and expertise; effective teamworking; and a commitment to enhancing the student experience.

Applicants should have:

  • a postgraduate degree in a related subject area [essential]
  • a PhD (preferably in the arts) [essential]
  • a teaching qualification (PgCert or equivalent) [essential]
  • experience of supervising PhDs to completion [essential]
  • previous experience of teaching research methods at postgraduate level [essential]
  • good awareness of HE teaching and learning in the creative arts [desirable]
  • Fellowship of the HEA (or an application underway). [desirable]

We warmly encourage applications from academics of colour, who are currently under-represented on our programme team.
