The opportunity

This is a key role in a cross-disciplinary funded academic research project exploring how Artificial Intelligence (AI) will shape the next generation of professional services. This is an ambitious and exciting initiative that will bring together perspectives from several academic fields to explore and assess the implications of AI in professional services firms and the barriers and potential for service innovation. The role will include working closely with other academics, professional bodies, managers in firms, regulators and other stakeholders.

It’s a unique opportunity to use and further develop critical design research expertise to develop insights and ideas, enable collaboration across disciplines and effective co-production of the research.

Your key duties include preparation, facilitation, delivery and documentation of collaborative futures and prototyping workshops and design sprint projects with firms. This is a hands-on role that requires shifting between the practical enabling of exploring the potential for emerging technologies and critically assessing the implications of AI. You will lead the development of outputs such as design principles, insights, customer journey maps, mock-ups, prototypes and reports associated with next generation professional services.

Your day to day activities will range from the tasks associated with delivering such workshops and supporting managers to bring a design approaches into experimental projects using AI, and desk based research, sense-making, discussion and writing in dialogue with the rest of the research team.

About you

We are looking for someone with a background in design research, service design, interaction design or a closely related area such as social research, innovation studies or digital/HCI. You will have completed (or be close to completing) your PhD.

You will have a good working knowledge of applied service design, design thinking, participatory design and prototyping in business and innovation contexts.

You will have experience of leading, preparing, facilitating, delivering and documenting design workshops and the co-design and exploration of prototypes and mock-ups of future services based on emerging technologies.

You will be keen to apply your expertise in using design research approaches and methods to a contemporary organisational and sectoral issue.

You will be a skilled and confident collaborator in a fast-moving cross-disciplinary context working closely with the wider research team and managers from firms, as well as being able to work independently to complete the required tasks.
