The opportunity

The 3D workshop is comprised of wood and plastic workshops, a 3D printing and scanning area and a large laser cutting suite. It is a College Wide service, assisting students from any one of LCC’s diverse range of courses with the 3D workshop team supporting all manner of 3D making.

The candidate will be expected to support technical teaching and the day-to-day management of the above in the workshop with an emphasises on 3D printing. This would include but is not limited to;

  • Daily setup, running and maintenance of the workshops 6 3D FDM and Stereolithography printers.
  • Supporting students learning on the 3D printers, helping with files, demonstrating the machines, and checking prints.
  • Setting up and running the workshop 3 laser cutters, 2 vinyl cutter and scanner when required.
  • Supporting students learning on the laser cutters and vinyl cutters.
  • Supporting the 3D workshop email account, website, and the online resource booking system.
  • Supporting the creation of online and printed resources to support teaching and learning.
  • Managing materials and ensuring high health and safety standards are followed.
  • Managing student booked sessions in the workshop and on the machinery.
  • Contributing to the development of 3D making at LCC.

This role requires the candidate to work onsite due to the physical nature of the role.

About you

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience working within 3D making facilities within an educational or professional environment or with suitable transferrable skills. They will have a good understanding of best practice within a workshop environment, including the use of equipment and materials, maintenance of the area, health & safety, and administrative tasks. They should have practical knowledge and hands on experience in: 

  • The setting up and running of 3D printers.
  • Digital modelling and file fixing for 3D printing.
  • The setting up and running of laser and vinyl cutters.
  • Vector creation and set up for laser and vinyl cutting using Adobe Illustrator.
  • Some knowledge of plastic and woodworking fabrication and ability to see how all areas of the workshop can be used together to create better projects.

As well as technical skills related to the 3D workshop, we are looking for someone who has experience supporting the development of online teaching resources as well as working and supporting online booking systems for machinery and services.
