The opportunity

MA Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins is a two-year postgraduate course with a typical enrolment of around 90 students. The course combines studio and research-based engagement with contemporary culture and media to transform the traditional practices, tools and contexts of graphic design. It positions graphic communication designers as actors within a range of contexts, networks and practices and takes a dynamic subject approach rooted in a highly international and interdisciplinary community which values diversity in all its forms. Examples of the work of MA GCD’s most recent graduates can be viewed at http://csmgcd.net/2020/ma. There is also an animated film about the course by a 2019 graduate which can be screened here: https://youtu.be/5Y0nUuyromM.

The Course Leader will be responsible for leading on all aspects of the development and delivery of MA Graphic Communication Design including cultivating a distinct subject position, planning and delivery of academic units and assessments, overseeing high-quality teaching and feedback, coordinating the provision of pastoral and academic support, managing staff, participating in quality and enhancement processes, recruiting students and developing the external profile of the course. During the 2020-21 academic year there is an opportunity to make significant curricular changes as part of cyclical re-approvals and in relation to new college and university initiatives on anti-racism and the climate emergency. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the vision and strategic development of the programme as well as work in accordance with current university academic policy and frameworks.

What we offer

We are UAL

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education. Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally. The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline. Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas, and are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject, so emerging work is at the forefront of its area.  CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of our general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible.

The Graphic Communication Design programme at Central Saint Martins facilitates a large heterogenous community of students and staff to thrive through communication practice in diverse and meaningful ways. We ask and answer questions through and about graphic communication design. The staff are a forward-thinking and outward-facing team who value pedagogic innovation, critical practice and explorative approaches to the possibilities of the discipline.
