We work at the cutting edge of new thinking and developments to prepare our students for successful careers in the creative industries of the future. The Grow Lab technical resource provides biology expertise support to a range of post-graduate Masters and PhD students across Biodesign, Art & Science and Material Futures courses.

You will create and deliver workshops and provide technical support for day-to-day operation of resources linked to the delivery of Grow Lab practices. You will play an integral part of the technical team, contributing your experience working with micro-organisms and plant tissue, synthetic biology, DNA, microbiology, microscopy, new media, imaging, electronics and sensors. Your role will encompass professional applied experience. You will also have the opportunity to develop new skills and experience across a wide range of technical workshops.

Your role will encompass communicating with stakeholders, acting as a lead point of contact for technical support, and ensuring access to up-to-date and accurate information for students, academics, fellow technicians and other university staff.

About you

We are looking for an experienced, adaptable, dynamic, self-motivated person. Ideally a creative individual with a passion for biology and living systems, and an interest in contemporary questions of science in culture, who will relish the challenge of supporting a diverse range of talented and renowned academics.

We need someone who is a good communicator, able to explain complex information clearly, with an in-depth knowledge of microbiology, biology and technology, speculative design and new media, who is enthusiastic about imparting knowledge to students and able to meet the evolving challenge of biodesign experimentation in a creative lab context.

You will have excellent applied experience suited to support safe practice in a Cat.1 biology lab, including imaging and hardware operations. It would be helpful to be proficient in some relevant creative, analysis, and presentation software (eg Adobe software, ImageJ, and/or equivalents).

If there are any aspects of the role that you may require training in, then this will be provided. CSM is committed to the personal development of its technical staff.

The application form sets out a number of competence questions related to some of the following selection criteria. Shortlisting will be based on your responses to these questions. Please make sure you provide evidence to demonstrate clearly how you meet these criteria.
