The opportunity

The Design School is looking to recruit a Course Leader for the MA Design for Art Direction course.

This course combines academic study with creative and professional practice in a project-led curriculum drawing on a range of interdisciplinary perspectives, prompting reflection on the role of the creative studio to broaden the public imagination. This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate who is committed to art direction and experimentation in visual communication. The position invites applicants who are interested in facilitating students’ learning through cross-disciplinary design practice, at the intersections of art, design, science and technology.

As Course Leader you will be responsible to the Programme Director for the academic leadership and management of the MA. This includes maintenance and enhancement of standards, responsibility for the design, development and delivery of the curriculum, management of learning, teaching and assessment of students as well as resources allocated. You will bring research and/or industry and teaching experience at postgraduate level.

About you

We are looking for an individual with a qualification at undergraduate and postgraduate level relevant to the subject area of art direction or creative direction. You will have knowledge of delivering innovative projects in a professional and/or academic environment and experience of a range of art direction specialist skills and processes in the context of creative industries. You will also have comprehensive working knowledge of design research methodologies, as well as, curriculum design and course development.

As an academic, previous teaching experience at postgraduate level is essential in addition to experience of research and/or professional practice in visual communication with focus on design for art direction. You should also demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of design principles, social enterprise, digital literacy, the creative and cultural industries and the global social, cultural, environmental, political and economic forces that are transforming design practices and discourses. Previous leadership and academic management experience is desirable.

The successful candidate should possess effective interpersonal skills and be a student-centred teacher focused on promoting diversity and inclusivity, while demonstrating strong communication, management and organisational skills; able to work collaboratively with colleagues to develop the subject area and share expertise.
