The opportunity

The role of the Dean for Academic Programmes is central to the success of Central Saint Martins and to its smooth operation. The main aspect of the role is to oversee, manage, support and develop four programmes: Culture and Enterprise, Drama and Performance, Fine Art, Graphic Communication Design.

This is a very broad range of disciplines, and so academic leadership of the individual subjects is mainly delivered by the four programme directors and their course leaders. The role of the Dean (AP) is therefore somewhat different from a ‘normal’ Dean. Rather than directing a specific entity (a faculty or school) the Dean AP works with discipline-focussed communities of academics, promoting critical debate and effective management while enabling productive relationships with administrative, technical and other central teams.

The role is by its very nature collaborative; it needs someone who is both generous in accepting multiple voices and decisive when these voices start to clash or need prompting. The Dean (AP) needs to provide constructive challenge - intellectually, creatively and in terms of standards and approach. Finally, the Dean (AP) oversees the work and output of the programmes in relation to TEF, REF and Knowledge Exchange activities.

About you

With a postgraduate qualification or practice equivalent in art or design, you possess demonstrable knowledge of past and present organisations and trends in the UK and globally. You will have a substantial record of teaching, research and/or professional practice in an art or design discipline, preferably related to one of the four programme areas.

As a motivational leader, you will have gained experience of leading teams effectively and promoting collaboration across functions. Your knowledge of commercialising design/creative industries courses, facilities and research will ensure income generation for the College and you will be able to initiate innovative solutions to problems which have a strategic impact.  You will have the ability to effectively plan, shape and influence developments as well as prioritise and manage complex projects in order to achieve the College’s long term strategic objectives.

In return, University of the Arts London offers generous leave, an attractive pension and a commitment to your continuing personal development and training in an environment that encourages excellence, creativity and diversity. Relocation assistance is available.

What we offer

We are UAL

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education.  Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally. The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline. Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas, and are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject.

CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of our general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible.
