If you are a skilled technician, with knowledge in a wide range of costume design, fabric manipulation/pattern cutting, creative expression of materials and a good understanding of theatre production processes and practices, this is an exciting opportunity to be at the cutting edge of live performance, arts and design at a new chapter in the history of Central Saint Martins and a new era in arts education.

As the Specialist Technician for Costume, you will be part of a technical team supporting the Performance Programme by providing professional technical expertise, guidance and knowledge that supports teaching and research and contributing critical input to students’ concepts and expressive/creative intention. This will require your expertise in pattern cutting, sewing, costume construction and knowledge of using a variety of different materials, for both traditional garments and more experimental costumes.

You will also be responsible for specialist equipment, consumables usage and maintenance in accordance with relevant legislation, health and safety policy and University policy, as well as the administration of systems, orders, bookings and maintenance records.

About you

You should have professional and relevant experience, gained through working in industry/practice and/or education, with knowledge of a wide range costume design, fabric manipulation/pattern cutting, creative expression of materials and a good understanding of theatre production processes and practices. You must be able to demonstrate keen independent organisation and self-motivation, and be capable of passing on technical skills to a wide range of student/client capabilities.

You should be a qualified practitioner in the use of wardrobe equipment i.e. industrial sewing machines, overlockers and relevant technologies. You will bring with you an awareness and appreciation of the need for high levels of customer care, and a high standard of Health & Safety in the wardrobe workshop. Your experience will enable you to solve standard predictable and technical problems, as well as innovate design solutions, and inspire the next generation of theatre design, arts and performance professionals. You will not only bring key skills with you but contribute to ongoing development of the area
